Isaiah 66:10-24

¹⁰^(A)“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
    all you who mourn over her;
¹¹that you may nurse and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
    from her glorious abundance.”^[a]

¹²For thus says the Lord:
^(B)“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and ^(C)you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.
¹³As one whom his mother comforts,
    so ^(D)I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
¹⁴You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
    ^(E)your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and ^(F)the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
    and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.

Final Judgment and Glory of the Lord

¹⁵“For behold, ^(G)the Lord will come in fire,
    and ^(H)his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
    and his rebuke with flames of fire.
¹⁶For ^(I)by fire ^(J)will the Lord enter into judgment,
    and by his sword, with all flesh;
    and those slain by the Lord shall be many.

¹⁷^(K)“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, ^(L)eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.

¹⁸“For I know^[b] their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming^[c] ^(M)to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, ¹⁹and I will set a sign among them. And from them ^(N)I will send survivors to the nations, to ^(O)Tarshish, ^(P)Pul, and ^(Q)Lud, who draw the bow, to ^(R)Tubal and ^(S)Javan, ^(T)to the coastlands far away, ^(U)that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. ²⁰^(V)And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations ^(W)as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. ²¹^(X)And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

²²“For as ^(Y)the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
    so ^(Z)shall your offspring and your name remain.
²³^(AA)From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

²⁴“And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For ^(AB)their worm shall not die, ^(AC)their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹²Now when he heard that ^(A)John had been arrested, ^(B)he withdrew into Galilee. ¹³And leaving ^(C)Nazareth he went and lived in ^(D)Capernaum by ^(E)the sea, in the territory of ^(F)Zebulun and Naphtali, ¹⁴^(G)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

¹⁵^(H)“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
    the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
¹⁶^(I)the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and ^(J)shadow of death,
    on them a light has dawned.”

¹⁷^(K)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ^(L)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^[a]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

¹⁸^(M)While walking by ^(N)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you ^(O)fishers of men.”^[b] ²⁰Immediately they left their nets and followed him. ²¹And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. ²²Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

²³^(P)And he went throughout all Galilee, ^(Q)teaching in their synagogues and ^(R)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and ^(S)healing every disease and every affliction among the people. ²⁴So his fame spread throughout all ^(T)Syria, and ^(U)they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and ^(V)pains, ^(W)those oppressed by demons, ^(X)those having seizures, and ^(Y)paralytics, and he healed them. ²⁵^(Z)And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the ^(AA)Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount

5 Seeing the crowds, ^(AB)he went up on the mountain, and when he ^(AC)sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

Salt and Light

¹³“You are the salt of the earth, ^(AY)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

¹⁴^(AZ)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵^(BA)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before others, so ^(BB)that^[d] they may see your good works and ^(BC)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

60 ^(A)Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and ^(B)the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
²For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will be seen upon you.
³^(C)And nations shall come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your rising.

⁴^(D)Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
    they all gather together, they come to you;
^(E)your sons shall come from afar,
    and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
⁵Then you shall see and ^(F)be radiant;
    your heart shall thrill and exult,^[a]
because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
    ^(G)the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
⁶A multitude of camels shall cover you,
    the young camels of ^(H)Midian and ^(I)Ephah;
    all those from ^(J)Sheba shall come.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

⁸For I tell you that Christ ^(A)became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order ^(B)to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, ⁹and in order ^(C)that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

^(D)“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
and sing to your name.”

¹⁰And again it is said,

^(E)“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

¹¹And again,

^(F)“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him.”

¹²And again Isaiah says,

^(G)^(H)“The root of Jesse will come,
even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
^(I)in him will the Gentiles hope.”

¹³May the God of hope fill you with all ^(J)joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles
